Sense of Taste - Taste Isn't Everything

Cats have a reputation for being finicky eaters, and their is a scientific explanation. Cats have only 473 taste buds compared to the more than 9,000 human-beings posses. As feline taste buds are few in numbers and poorly developed, cats depend more on their sense of smell than taste. They do not adopt the canine motto of "eat first, ask later" when it comes to food.

As most cat owners would know, cats don't always eat the same thing 2 days in a row. We could be going to the supermarket and buying several varieties of food just to have them turn their nose up at it. The secret is to not give into them. Place the food down in the morning and if they haven't eaten it in 30 minutes, don't give into your kitty and change the food. This encourages them to be even more spoilt then they already are.

Sense of Touch - Touchy-Feely

Cats rely on their whiskers and paws to scout out their surroundings. Cats don't only have whiskers on there face, but happen to have them on the backs of their front legs. They use whiskers as an antennae, touching objects around them and determining if they can squeeze through tight openings. Sensory whiskers called "vibrissae" help cats to stalk prey in dim light and to navigate.

Blind kitties obviously use the sense of touch to get them around. This and their good memories after they have worked out their surroundings. Even if you happen to change the furniture around, you would notice that most blind kitties would not actually run into stuff but stop just shy of it.

Sense of Smell - The Nose Knows

Cats learn about their environment by sniffing things out. They have about 200 million odor-sensitive cells in their nostrils, compared with our mere 5 million. The feline nose does more than sniff out food morsels on the kitchen floor. Cats use their noses to communicate with other cats. Each time a cat rubs his scent glands from his head or paws on an object, he is leaving a feline business card for other cats to sniff and interpret.

Some cat owners may of experienced first hand the full power of a cat's sense of smell. When you know the cat is at the far end of the house and you are in the kitchen and you open up a tin of Tuna, some fresh meat, or even walking through the front door with some cooked chicken. The cat is right at your feet within seconds.

Sense of hearing - What Did You Say?

Cats can hear much better than humans. They can also hear better than dogs.  They can hear sounds in the ultrasonic range, that is, very high frequencies. The reason cats can hear so much better than us is they have a cone-shaped ear that can rotate like a mini satellite dish to hone in on sounds. With the ability to pick up high frequencies, this makes the cat a great hunter and can detect the squeaks of a mouse in the house far faster than we can.

As good as cats hearing is, it is 2nd to none unless they don't want to hear you. How many of us are forever calling our cats or talking to them and they are pretending to be asleep or doing something they shouldn't be. They have mastered the skill of selective-hearing and choose to continuously practice it.

Why Do Cats Attack You?

Cats can be content and purring one minute, then suddenly jump out at you and bite or scratch you the next.

Many cats nip and bite when they’re happy, particularly if they have a low threshold for stimulation. You can learn the warning signs of when your cat’s becoming overstimulated: you might feel his muscles tense or see his tail twitch or his rear end waggle. If you can tell he’s about to bite, stop patting him until his calmed down.

If your cat is stalking your feet, he’s engaging in what is called predatory-play behavior. He has a natural instinct to attack moving objects in the wild. Indoors, your feet are the only moving prey he has to ambush. To prevent this behavior you can give him plenty of non-human moving targets to play with by trailing a string across the floor, waving feather toys, or giving him balls to bat around.

Discouraging his attacks is another way to help prevent the attack. Safe and effective ways to do this are spraying him with a water bottle or using a small can of compressed air to make a loud hissing sound. If you are vigilant and discourage the attacks consistently, you’ll take a big step toward changing your cat’s behavior.

Reshape the World

Mr. Reds arrival

To everyone who has been awaiting the news about Mr. Red. Jill collected him late afternoon on Saturday the 5th of May 2012. When he arrived, he decided that Paul was going to be his best friend. He walked straight up to Paul sat beside him and watched TV. They were watching the history channel together.

When Mr. Red first met Garfield, and Desi, he was very curious and wanted to play. Garfield and Desi weren't too sure about this new arrival. They kept a close eye on him from afar.

It took Garfield and Desi a couple of days to come to grips with this new resident Mr. Red, but now they have all gotten to know each other. Desi and Mr. Red have been running around together playing, while Garfield watches in amusement.
